More often than not, many residential, commercial, or industrial buildings have flat roofs installed. For instance, construction companies often install EPDM roofing (cost-effective and resilient) and GRP roofing (lightweight and long-lasting). However, your flat roof may undergo leakage in extreme conditions in time.
With all that said, you may be wondering: Can a flat roof be repaired?
The short answer is yes.
Reasons for a Damage or Leakage in a Flat Roof
- Usually, the EPDM membrane does not get damaged and bears the consequences of harsh weather conditions. However, constant exposure to sun rays, rain, snow, or wind can put your roof lifespan at risk.
- Cracks in your fibreglass roofing (GRP) are another reason for roof damage. For example, GRP roofing requires careful installation. However, in poorly installed roofing, cracking or flaking of the upper layer can occur when there is not enough space or gap for the expansion of fibreglass roofing as the weather transitions from cold to hot.
Repair a Flat Roof
You may think that repairing a flat roof isn’t as easy as it sounds, but with some common sense and a foolproof manual from us, we believe everyone including the general DIYer can complete a repair.
RKD always suggests being extra cautious when working at any height and to have someone else around if possible.
Cleaning the Debris
Usually, leaving debris over your flat roof (as it is a low slope) creates a hindrance in the path of water when it rains. For example, it blocks the waterway that either moves in the wrong direction (not to the drainage system) or seeps into the roofing. With this in mind, you should clean any debris left on your flat roof to avoid the chances of leakage.
Finding Leak Spot
The leak spot doesn’t need to be at a point where water is dripping inside your house. So go to the rooftop and follow the direction of water from the dripping point to where you can see a hole.
